StreamSpot Wired Recap: CES Wrap-up and Interview with Mid-South Broadcasting's Michael Wilson

Posted by Laura Duerring on Jan 15, 2018 2:02:02 PM

The new year brought new and exciting topics on StreamSpot Wired, from recapping what came out of the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 (AI, a power outage, the dazzling Intel Shooting Star drone light show, and the favorite of host Jeff Adams, the Sony Aibo robot dog) to a great interview to start the new year with streaming guru Michael Wilson of Mid-South Broadcasting. Wilson is a valued expert in the StreamSpot community, as well as many online streaming communities, for his insight and sheer volume of experience in live streaming events for his Mid-South clients.

Wilson shared his take on what important factors should go in to choosing a streaming provider vs. opting to use a free streaming service, as well as what features are important to his company when live streaming, particularly when streaming high school basketball games. Wilson also shared his own clock-buzzer calls and moments of panic when streaming on location (we've all been there!) and why local recording has become standard practice in his business.

Not to be outdone by the robot dog footage at the top of the show, StreamSpot's own Goldendoodle-in-residence Max made a quick appearance to close out the show!

To check out the show archive in its entirety, take a look at the video below, and stay Wired!

Akamai Talks Content Delivery with StreamSpot Wired

Posted by Laura Duerring on Dec 18, 2017 3:42:32 PM

230,000 servers deployed in over 130 countries worldwide—Akamai Technologies knows a thing or two about content delivery! Akamai’s Jon Alexander joined StreamSpot Wired to talk about how the world’s largest CDN is constantly at work to provide the highest possible stream quality to all devices, and why that’s a great thing for StreamSpot customers.

Alexander stated that Akamai's goal is to put servers as close to end users as possible to deliver content to guarantee the reliability and highest possible quality to all desired devices the end users are using. Of interest, he noted the highest traffic event for Akamai occurred earlier this year, delivering 60 terabits of traffic simultaneously. Wow!

In looking towards the future, Alexander noted Akamai is forecasting and investing in services, new codecs, formats, and preparation of content to ensure they can support all devices with the best possible quality.

Akamai’s robust network of servers around the world is the perfect solution to ensure the best possible streaming experience for StreamSpot customers and their viewers, and we're thrilled to work with the team at Akamai Technologies!

Posted by Laura Duerring on Dec 4, 2017 3:23:57 PM

It's not surprising that security and streaming share the same requirements of reliable, built-to-last cameras, making the synergy of surveillance cameras for live streaming so dynamic.

Axis Product Manager Steve Burdet gave great insight into the most important factors to consider when deciding if a network camera for streaming is best for your venue and needs and ran through the features of the new M5525-E models that will be hitting the market soon.

New Updates to the StreamSpot Player

Posted by Ryan Campbell on Nov 28, 2017 12:48:01 PM
StreamSpot is excited to announce the release of several upgrades to our custom streaming players. The upgraded player is the result of feedback from our customers, industry trends and playback standards, and the combined knowledge of our streaming experts. As we began to break down the player we began to think of new ways to implement features and ways to improve its functionality and ease of use. The result was a co mplete rebuild of the streaming player from the ground up. The upgraded player is faster, lighter and even more compatible with all devices and browsers.

The changes go beyond just the aesthetic look of the player, we have done away with the former slideout “menu", customers revealed that viewers were not sure how to access the menu and were not aware of the many options and features that existed on the player.

Compression, Codecs, Keyframes, and the Basics of Stream Quality

Posted by Corey Taylor on Jul 10, 2017 4:42:51 PM

A/V technology, particularly as it relates to streaming, has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time. In the last few years, shooting high-quality video has gone from an investment in particularly expensive capture equipment to something achievable by much more practical and affordable equipment, while still producing a high-quality product. However, this great quality has some downsides, including the fact that high quality translates to a very high data rate (or bitrate), with some as high as 5TB an hour! These files are too large for most user’s internet connections, even those who may have incredible download speeds, and most devices your viewers are watching your stream on aren’t designed to play these videos in the format in which they are shot. The solution to all these problems? Video compression.
